Martine Caverl
2021–2024 Fellow: Ujimaa MedicsMartine is a registered nurse and certified case manager with a background in community organizing, street medic work, and birth work. In 2015, she helped found Ujimaa Medics (UMedics), a Black health collective that promotes emergency first response and community care to build resilience and long-term wellness in our neighborhoods. UMedics has reached over 2,000 people with its gunshot first aid, asthma, COVID-19, protest defense, diabetes, and seizure workshops mainly in the Chicago area, in addition to Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Washington DC, and Seattle.
She is a graduate of New York University and the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. She is also CERT-certified, a Level Four instructor with the Outdoor Leadership Skills Project and a member of the Global Advisory Board for the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership. She stays inspired by the legacy we will all leave behind for her daughter’s generation.
